Tutorial 05

Image
Screenshot of the Unity, tutorial 5 work, fixing the smoke effect I am looking forward to almost be done with this game,  everything is coming together and the game looks very detailed overall. There is a lot of new functions in it which makes it more fun and interactive to play as the player has many abilities and you can create a very big world map with the use of tiles. This week I have managed to fix some of my mistakes from last week and polished some areas of the game. The first part of this week's tutorial flew very fast but the second part involved a bit more thinking and there were times when you had to go back to the previous tutorials to repeat some steps like for the effects where you had to split them into four again. The link that was provided turned out to be incorrect as I couldn't find it and then had a read over the comment sections where I found out that it is definitely the wrong link, the comments are very helpful in situations like this, I recommend having

Link to my analysed document The theme of connection: Overall in all of the resources, I have looked through the connection between the player and the avatar is a big and common topic. It looks at how close the player connects with the avatar and what makes them connect to the game. It is discussed what there is about the avatar and the game design that draws the player in. It states how the ability to customize your avatar makes the person feel like they are connected to the avatar. Other things that connect the two are any similarities that they have like characteristics or storyline. The theme of relationship: This theme differs from the theme of connection despite its similarities because it is more specific and focuses on what type of relationship is the PAR (player-avatar relationship).  The PAR can be very meaningful or more basic as they can be both long-term or short-term. In most cases, it was discussed how a player has a strong PAR where the player develops feelings about

Unity Tutorial 04

Image
This week I have managed to make the robot move and added some more coding to make more abilities for the player in the game. I have come across some errors and issues but towards the end, they seemed to be working alright. In this tutorial, we have made some sprite animation which was interesting to learn and find out how Unity works on the commands that are given by us the creators. It allowed you to have a better insight into how the scripts and Unity connect off one another to perform a certain action. In the second part we have done some world interactions where we made our first projectile so that the avatar Ruby can collect it and then throw it, there was an optional task to complete to make your game look "prettier" as mentioned which made your robot dance, however, due to being short on time I skipped that task after having a quick read over it. The game overall is starting to look more professional but at the same time more demanding with the coding and lots of di

Screenshot of working on the reading using Adobe Acrobat Pro  Resource 5 PAMELA LIVINGSTONE (2015). WHY MY AVATAR LOOKS LIKE ME:  A STUDY ON IDENTITY IN DUNGEONS & DRAGONS. B.Comm, Ryerson University, 2014 This paper focuses on the player's and avatar's identity in the game "Dungeons & Dragons" and includes a study that was carried out on four players that gamed with each other once every week for a full month. The study looks at the impact of the avatar's character and its visual design on the player's and what consequence it has on the player-avatar connection throughout the gameplay. The author's study is on how the avatar design acts on how the player and the avatar link together and affect one another. The paper goes deeply into discussing areas like the importance of identity in games, the link between identity and the avatar, how the visuals play an important role along with narration. All of the above are examined in the relation to the pla

Unity Tutorial 03

Image
Screenshot of my Unity from this week The tutorials are getting more difficult at times and there are more steps that you need to do on your own with fewer guidelines. I like the use of short quick little videos that are embedded in some steps however I think that some of them are too fast and have too many steps to show. It is very hard to check if you have the settings correct and if you followed the steps right as unfortunately, you can not pause them at a certain point and then there are no screenshots provided below. I think they should provide screenshots of what the settings should be set to before telling us to move onto the next step. It would be very helpful if they could do that like they do with the scripts at the end of each section. Overall I have got on well this week apart from one issue. My bot enemy is not moving on its own and I can't seem to figure out what the problem is. I have checked my code and settings in Unity and everything seems to be correct unless I

Screenshot of some of my resources collected in  RefWorks Link to my first resource Object, Me, Symbiote, Other: A social typology of player-avatar relationships by Jaime Banks. First Monday , Volume 20, Number 2 - 2 February 2015 The author looks at the outlook of the player to avatar connection and examines if their relationship can be seen as a variably social relationship or not. This resource points out that the player and avatar relationship can be very strong when a player has the ability to customize their avatar which leads to a stronger connection. The article looks deep into the PAR ( the player and avatar relationship) to discover if this relationship can ever so often be called a social relationship. As the avatar is non a real person it is said to be non-existing outside the player's mind. To further develop the research of the PARs and to establish if these relationships are capable to be social relationships an investigation was done. The players of the MMO (World o

Unity Tutorial 02

Image
Screenshot of this week's Unity tutorial This game is slowly coming together, this week as part of the tutorial we have added some new objects and messed around with some physics. I am finding this more detailed and complicated than the 3D game design for some strange reason but I am getting through the tutorials quite well. Overall I found the 3D more interesting and fun to make. This week we have made some prefabs and the tutorial explained how to create prefabs and what is their functions which I found very useful. I wasn't very sure and confident with the prefabs but after this week's Unity tutorial I have learned how to make them and what the benefit of them is. The prefabs really speed up the process and allow you to change the color for example of all the same prefabs at the same time. This means to don't have to spend too much time going through all the same objects to change them individually.  I like that we get the ability to create and develop something ours

Tech Tip: Twitter Follow

I have just followed an account on Twitter called Dan Fornace who I found has some very interesting tips on game design. I think following his account will help me out and add more structure to my game. Looking forward to my 2D game design and will be checking out his account often to find more tips.

2D Unity Tutorial 01

Image
Screenshot of my Unity, working on the 2D Ruby's adventure I'm am very happy that the coding is the same as it was in the 3D game tutorials. It is a great way to practice and hopefully understand the coding more. Think that I will now get more comfortable with coding in Unity and will be more capable of coding more actions myself with less help in the future. This week's tutorials felt quite nice to do and I am starting to think that so far the 2D game design seems to be slightly easier and I found the written form of the tutorial better than the video. It allowed me to work at my pace and it was faster and easier to go back over a part if you made a mistake or missed something by accident. This week I have completed the first part of the Unity tutorials and overall it the process went very well. I learned some shortcuts which I started to use and I found the world painting very fun to do. The overall tutorial went smoothly for me with some minor problems that I easily fi

Planning for my Topic

Image
Screenshot of my Refworks I have done a little research about my topic "The relationship between the gamer and the avatar" which I am finding very interesting. I am happy that I have changed my topic and like my new choice more. I have already come across some videos and articles on Google Scholar by having a quick look. I think this is going to be a fun topic to explore and discuss.  I have started with setting up my account on Refworks and our College library to get prepared for next week's research. In RefWorks, I have created a folder for this module where I will be putting in all my research and keeping track of the papers and research. I went over some settings and explored the tool to familiarise myself more with the page.    I know I will have to do much deeper research for my topic in the library because many resources that I have found are about games in general or about coding. I  will definitely be looking at the library resources in greater detail. It was m
